Living Melodies of God Series:
~~~A Translation of the Hebrew Text into its Equivalent Musical Note using the method developed by Uri Harel~~~
Following are excerpts from Music From God web site and Uri's discovery of music in the Bible:
By decoding the Hebrew letters of the Torah into their own musical notes the power of the original Hebrew text of the Bible is available in the universal language of music.
The Uniqueness of the Hebrew Aleph-Bet
Hebrew tradition is rich in ideas about the nature of the universe and the special relationship of the ancient Hebrew language to reality. According to the rabbis, when the LORD began to create the world, He used the powers of the Hebrew letters to bring it into existence. All of creation reflects the divine order which in turn is represented by the divine language and its symbols - the Hebrew alphabet. If human music is therapeutic, what can we say about music that derives its power from the Torah?
Uri Harel and the Center for Biblical Hebrew
Intrigued by traditional Hebrew teachings about multiple layers of meaning in the text of the Bible, Uri Harel began his experiment at the Center for Biblical Hebrew in Phoenix, Arizona. Harel, Founder and Director of the Center, spent countless hours tapping on a simple keyboard to find a formula that would unlock the musical patterns he knew were there - the culmination of eight years of painstaking research. These early experiments yielded a definitive conclusion! There is beautiful music encrypted in the ancient Hebrew text of the Bible.
Ancient Tradition Speaks of Music in the Bible
For years, Uri Harel, an Israeli Hebrew teacher, was talking to everyone who was willing to listen about his idea of music in the Bible. According to an old Hebrew tradition about the creation of the world, God used the Torah as a blueprint for the work of creating the universe. The 22 Hebrew letters in pre-determined combinations were used to accomplish this task. Those letters therefore represent the physical forces used in the creation process
Music is one of many hidden layers in the Hebrew Bible
Today new evidence confirms the idea that the original text of the Hebrew Bible is multi-layered and goes much deeper than the surface story. Mysterious codes embedded in the text contain information that could not have been written by human hands. "Why," Uri asked himself, "would one of the layers of this complex text not be music?" And if there is music in the text, how would one find it? The answer Uri came up with was to assign a musical note to each Hebrew letter and let the Bible "play itself..."
Several years of research culminated in findings that may forever change the public's perception of this popular ancient document, and increase interest in it among people of all walks of life. We have found the key to transforming Hebrew letters into musical notes and have opened the way for a new kind of Bible translation—not into yet another spoken language, but into the universal language of music."
